Senso Unico: Sunnyside’s Best Kept Secret
Senso Unico is a quaint Italian eatery located on 4304 47th Ave in the Sunnyside section of Queens. I enjoyed a seat outside and enjoyed the local scenery and as beautiful as the restaurant was, I was there for the food.
Chef Vincenzo Garofalo an under-the-radar culinary force who honed his skills at Michelin-starred Antica Osteria Nonna Rosa and Il Pellicano, wasted no time in getting me my first dishes; Carpaccio Di Carne and Cuoppo. The carpaccio (thinly sliced seared rib-eye, arugula, lemon and shaved parmesan cheese) was surprisingly tasty and the Cuoppo (fried calamari, shrimp, vegetables and spicy aioli) was easily my favorite dish of the night and it was just the second dish! Also arriving at my table was one of two glasses of prosecco.
The dishes continued to flow out of the kitchen as the Calamarata Ai Frutti Di Mare (artisanal fresh ring pasta, clams, mussels, calamari, shrimp, lobster, and tomato sauce) which I found to be a bit too spicy and the Gnocchial Presto (homemade ricotta dumpling, basil presto) was extremely tasty and light.
I would definitely visit Senso again, if only for the fried calamari. It was without a doubt the best calamari I’ve ever had! sensounicorestaurant.com
