Trattoria Italienne is a one-of-a kind restaurant, located on west 24th street, that specializes in Northern Italian and Southern French cuisine. The brainchild of Chef/Owner Jared Sippel, Italienne’s menu is based on authentic dishes from these regions as well as the surrounding areas of the Mediterranean; showing connections between the Basque region of Spain, with Morocco and France, as well as showcasing the relationship of Austria and Slovenia with Northern Italy. The ultimate goal is transporting the diner with authentic flavors.

The restaurant is divided into two rooms. In the front room, the large bar has a wood and marble counter and plenty of room to enjoy a drink and a bar snack or a full meal. The feel of the restaurant is rustic and expansive, with high ceilings and exposed wood beams. In the dining room, leather banquettes wrap around the room, with copious space between tables; not something you find everyday in a restaurant in Manhattan, especially the Flatiron District. Needless to say, I sat in the back area.

I started my meal with the Panzerotto (salumi & smoked mozzarella) which was quite tasty. I moved on to the Polpettini (pork meatballs with soft polenta & Calabrian chili agrodolce; both were simply divine.

After, I went straight for the pasta and enjoyed a Gargati, which is bianco di Napoli tomato with shelling beans, pancetta & peperoncino oil. The order was plentiful, with enough for me and my date to leave stuffed. I enjoyed a Bitter Smoke (mezcal Koch, aperol, zucca and lemon) with my meal and I feel like it paired with every dish quite flawlessly.

Tattoria Italienne is perfect if you want to treat that special someone to an extremely classy meal. I say go for it! italiennenyc.com
