Utsav: India in the Heart of Times Square
Utsav, located in the heart of Times Square at 1185 6th Ave, is a word with origins in Sanskrit which means festival, and that lively environment can be found nightly. While India is a land of many regions and cultures with an abundance of festivals to celebrate, Utsav embodies the explosion of colors, sounds, and rituals with a sumptuous feast. Utsav features a daily prix fixe menu in addition to a buffet lunch, which is one of the busiest in the city, and a dinner menu designed with authentic Indian food in mind.
I started my meal with samosas (Masala potato, green peas, tamarind sauce) that were quite tasty but the real treat was the coconut shrimp, which is definitely is a must-try. For my entree, I enjoyed some chicken tikka masala (Tandoori chicken tikka, tomato cream sauce) paired with some basmati rice, which was surprisingly light and filling. The meal was finished with a delectable mango mousse; the proverbial cherry on top.
The Pre FIxe Menu is the route to go when enjoying a meal at Utsav. It really gives you a chance to enjoy the most of what they have to offer.
Owner Nandita Khanna has lived in New York City for over fifteen years. Managing to ebb and flow with food trends, Nandita has succeeded where many have failed, going above and beyond with a complete renovation of the beautiful second-story space that peeks out over an alleyway smack in the middle of the Theater District. It’s no wonder the restaurant will celebrate its 20th Anniversary in 2020. utsavny.com
